New: Department of Medicine Faculty Award for Humanism in Medicine

Preamble:

The Department of Medicine’s top priority is to ensure patients and their families, and their experiences, drive our work. The fundamental principles of "person-centeredness" are open communication, mutual respect, and emotional connection between physicians and their patients.

As an indication of our commitment to the principle of person-centered care, we are delighted to announce the establishment of a new departmental award for Humanism in Medicine. This new award aims to recognize faculty members who exemplify a deep and abiding commitment to humanism in health care. Humanism is understood to be an acknowledgment of other human beings as individuals with autonomy, unique backgrounds, values, and perspectives, and a commitment to address issues of inclusion, equity, and social justice.

Nomination:

Nominations are welcome from members of the Department of Medicine, undergraduate and post-graduate trainees, and allied health professionals. Self-nomination is not allowed.

Process:

A nomination packet must include the following:

  1. Letter of nomination. Must include the narrative of a specific incident or situation in which a profound commitment to humanistic values was demonstrated.
  2. Up to two letters of support that describe specific stories of the actions and qualities of the nominee consistent with the criteria. (Optional but strongly encouraged)

Faculty members of the Department of Medicine

Deadline:

To celebrate the inaugural recipient of this award, the deadline for nominations will be March 31, 2018.
